Definitions:

merchant: refers to involvement in business or trade, especially trading with foreign countries

minefields: an area (on land or at sea) planted with explosive mines

minesweeper: a small warship designed to remove or detonate naval mines

U-boats: a German submarine – it is the abbreviation of Unterseeboot, or “undersea boat”

convoy: a fleet (group) of ships (or vehicles), accompanied by a protecting escort (e.g. an armed force, warship, etc.)

Allied Blockade: an effort to cut off supplies from Germany by blocking German ports
