In the previous lesson it was mentioned that:

  • England had Scandinavian kings in the 10th and 11th Centuries
  • by 1065 England had an Anglo-Saxon king, Edward the Confessor

When Edward the Confessor died, in January 1066, without an heir to the throne there was a dilemma. Why? Because there was now a succession crisis in England. Who should be the next king of England? Look at Edward the Confessor’s family tree to see who you think should be the next king of England…

When Edward the Confessor died without an heir to the throne there were some Anglo-Saxon kings who claimed the throne and there were also some Viking kings who claimed the throne. To understand this better, let’s look at the following story of the kings of England: (You will see how England had Scandinavian kings from time to time. This video has excellent background information – but you do not have to remember all the details!)
